Problem Statement

When filing taxes online, have you ever come across a complicated question and wished you didn't need to file taxes at all, or had other things you'd rather be doing. Filing taxes can be a difficult and long process leaving tax payers frustrated, confused, and questioning if they're making the correct choices.

Online tax software can leave much to be desired, such as easier communication, more information on complicated questions, and easier access to a tax professional. Stress is a common side effect of filing, which can lead to bad tax decisions.

Goals

1. Make communication with an experienced tax professional more available, in multiple different forms.

2. Allow users to find and share all information necessary to filing in one spot.

3. Get rid of high level questioning, often found in tax software, and simplify the filing process.

Target Audience

KTS outlined a couple potential target audience groups in our initial meeting. They were aware that a lot of older (55+) people liked to use his service because of the personal touch he gives. So, people who do not enjoy using tax software and prefer to speak to a human tax accountant fall in this range. Another target audience group that was listed were business owners. These people tend to have more complex tax documents and they want either someone to just 'take care of it' or an expert accountant to help answer questions they have. Because of this, I have also included small to large business owners or anyone with more complicated tax forms (people with assets, properties, etc.)

User Persona

Design System

KTS had no branding or logo when I took on this project and gave me free reign on designing the logo. I initially came up with 3 distinct designs and then added fully complete logos to these designs with the business name. The owner picked the "K" logo, but asked to have it spell out 'KTS' instead since his clients refer to him as such more often. I made the revisions and provided three sizes of logos for the project.

Final Takeaways

Kaucher's Tax Service needed a website where clients could find all of their needs in one place to make the process as easy as possible.

KTS has become well known for their personal touch when it comes to taxes, and always being open for questions and communication in any form. Designing a site that allowed easy and welcomed conversation was the main goal for this client.

I was able to provide basic branding for KTS, as well as design and hand over their new logo, allowing the client to be much more memorable by their clients.

Using a minimal and classic UI, and allowing the client to be able to quickly upload documents, easily request information, and schedule meetings themselves will make KTS a strong player in the tax accounting field, as well as build a strong presence online as an easy to use service for a complicated process.

Competitive analysis provided enough evidence to assume that KTS could lean into their expert advice, and physical presence as a strength. During user research, it was made known that users really want to have access to a person when they have questions, as well as make the more complex parts of filing simpler by handing over the process to an expert.
